Video Summary
The webinar, moderated by Dr. Eva Welch, featured Dr. Mamta Mamak discussing the diagnosis and management of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/BPS) in patients with endometriosis. She emphasized that both conditions are frequently underdiagnosed, often with years of symptom delay, and can contribute to central sensitization and chronic pelvic pain. Dr. Mamak reviewed symptom patterns, physical exam findings, bladder diaries, and questionnaires such as the O’Leary-Sant and PUF tools to help identify disease and track response to treatment.

She explained that IC/BPS is a symptom-based diagnosis after ruling out other causes with urinalysis, urine culture, and sometimes cystoscopy, especially to identify Hunner lesions. Endometriosis diagnosis relies on history, exam, imaging, and laparoscopy when needed, but treatment can begin empirically. Because symptoms overlap, both disorders should be assessed and managed concurrently.

Treatment for IC/BPS was presented as multimodal: stress reduction, diet modification, pelvic floor physical therapy, oral agents such as amitriptyline and hydroxyzine, bladder instillations, and in refractory cases Botox or sacral/pudendal neuromodulation. For endometriosis, she reviewed NSAIDs, hormonal therapy, and excisional surgery when appropriate. During Q&A, she addressed insurance coverage, medication choices, and her preference for treating both conditions in parallel.
