Pdf Summary
The poster presents a systematic review conducted to assess the incidence of hydronephrosis (kidney swelling) associated with advanced pelvic organ prolapse (POP), as well as the impact of POP treatment on resolving hydronephrosis. The review found that hydronephrosis is not rare and is found in 10-22% of patients with advanced POP. Risk factors for hydronephrosis include age, parity, and failed conservative therapy with pessary. The review also found that most cases of obstructive uropathy (56-83%) resolve with the use of pessary or surgical correction.

The review included 15 case reports and 8 retrospective and prospective studies. The case reports highlighted cases where patients with advanced POP and hydronephrosis were treated with surgery, pessary, stents, or a combination of these interventions. Resolution of hydronephrosis varied among the cases, with some cases resolving and others leading to chronic kidney failure or end-stage renal disease.

The experimental design studies included in the review examined the incidence of hydronephrosis in patients with various degrees of POP and the resolution rate with different treatments. The studies found that the incidence of hydronephrosis ranged from 3.57% to 30.6% in patients with POP. Treatment options included pessary, surgery, or physical therapy, and resolution rates varied from 56% to 83%.

Overall, the review emphasizes the need for upper tract imaging to assess for obstructive uropathy in patients with advanced POP and to plan interventions to prevent irreversible kidney damage. It also highlights the importance of individualized treatment approaches based on the severity of the prolapse and the presence of hydronephrosis.
