Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to determine if women who undergo radical cystectomy for uroepithelial carcinoma are at a higher risk of pelvic organ prolapse. A total of 107 subjects were identified for the study, with 36 participating in the survey group, 37 in the prolapse comparison group, and 44 in the incontinence comparison group. The study group reported significantly lower POPDI-6 scores compared to both the prolapse group and the incontinence group, even after considering known risk factors such as age, body mass index, and vaginal deliveries.

Symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse is a significant issue for older women, with around 13% undergoing surgery by age 80. Known risk factors include age, body mass index, and previous pregnancies with vaginal deliveries. However, there is limited data on the prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse in women who have undergone extensive pelvic surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the prevalence of prolapse in women who had undergone total cystectomy for urothelial carcinoma using a validated questionnaire.

The results of the study showed no association between undergoing radical cystectomy for uroepithelial carcinoma and symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse. The POPDI-6 scores were significantly lower in the study group compared to both the prolapse group and the incontinence group. This suggests that women who have had a radical cystectomy are even less likely to report symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse than a similar group of women.

The study has some limitations, including a small sample size, a relatively homogenous population, and different means of collecting information from the groups. It would be interesting to further evaluate other symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction in this population using qualitative means.

In conclusion, radical cystectomy for uroepithelial carcinoma does not correlate with the development of patient-reported symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse.
