Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the success of suburethral slings for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in obese and non-obese individuals. The prevalence of SUI and urge urinary incontinence (UUI) is higher in obese individuals, making surgical intervention more common. However, there is limited evidence on the outcomes of suburethral slings in the obese population.

The study retrospectively reviewed a database of patients who underwent suburethral sling placement at a single institution between 2003-2015. The primary outcome measure was success, defined as 'cured' or 'greatly improved', 'somewhat improved' based on patient satisfaction scores and negative postoperative stress tests. The results showed no significant difference in sling success between obese and non-obese individuals. Complication rates and re-intervention rates were also similar in both groups.

Table 1 shows the demographic characteristics of the two groups. The mean age was not significantly different, but the obese group had a higher mean body mass index (BMI). Other factors, such as parity, smoking, diabetes, and prior continence surgery, were comparable between the groups.

Table 2 presents the results of the study. The primary outcome of success was comparable in both obese and non-obese individuals. There was no significant difference in subjective complaints of incontinence or voiding dysfunction. Re-intervention rates and complications were also similar between the groups.

In conclusion, this study found that the outcomes of suburethral slings for SUI were comparable in obese and non-obese individuals. The results suggest that surgery can be an effective treatment option for SUI in the obese population, with similar success rates and complication rates to those in non-obese individuals.
