Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess perceptions related to body image in Spanish-speaking Latina women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Six focus group discussions were conducted, covering topics such as body image, self-esteem, sexuality, and femininity. The participants believed that feeling good about oneself and good health were essential for a positive self-body image. However, they universally believed that POP affects self-image by creating body distortion and causing embarrassment, sadness, and depression. POP also interfered with work-related activities and certain exercise activities, impacting self-worth and enjoyment of exercise. Participants did not believe that POP interfered with feelings of femininity, but it did impair attractiveness and self-worth by making them self-conscious about their physical appearance. POP also impacted wardrobe choices and impaired intimacy practices, including concerns about physical discomfort and partner perception. Libido and enjoyment of sexual practices were also impaired due to POP-related concerns.

The study findings suggest that symptomatic POP impairs body image, attractiveness, intimacy, sexual practices, and daily activities. The incorporation of body image-related themes may be beneficial in evaluating and intervening with symptomatic POP in Spanish-speaking Latina women. Three common themes were identified: the impact of POP on self-image, the impact on daily activities, and the impact on intimacy and sexual practices. The consensus concepts highlighted the negative physical and emotional impact of POP symptoms in this group. The study recommends considering these themes and concepts in the evaluation and intervention for women with symptomatic POP. References from previous studies on body image and low-income women were included.
