This document discusses the results of an internet-based survey conducted to evaluate the comfort and need for further training with pubovaginal slings (PVS) among surgeons performing slings for the management of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) among International Urogynecologists. The survey was completed by 556 members of the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA), out of approximately 1000 members.<br /><br />The results of the survey showed that providers in the United States were the most comfortable with PVS and more likely to offer it in clinical practice. However, younger providers and trainees expressed interest in receiving more training with PVS. Among the survey participants, 35% recalled performing less than five PVS procedures during training, while 20% performed more than 20. 28% of all participants offered PVS in their clinical practice, and 53% would be interested in further training if it became available.<br /><br />Exposure to PVS during training was associated with practicing in the US, being "very comfortable" with the procedure, and not desiring further training. Offering PVS in one's practice was associated with US providers, performing more than 20 PVS procedures during training, and being "very comfortable" with the procedure. Those who desired more training were younger and did not have exposure to PVS during training.<br /><br />The authors suggest that further investigation is needed in the current climate to address the interest among recent graduates and fellows in gaining more training with PVS. They also propose that simulation in conjunction with live surgery could be a way to achieve this additional training. Future studies could also explore how many procedures are required to achieve surgical competence for the use of PVS in clinical practice.
