This study aimed to evaluate the effects of vulvo-vaginal laser reshaping on postmenopausal vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy affects about 50% of women over the age of 60 and can cause symptoms such as dryness, irritation, dysuria, dyspareunia, and vaginal bleeding during sexual activity. Current management options include estrogen therapy, but there is a need for non-estrogen treatments. <br /><br />The study enrolled women presenting with symptoms of vaginal atrophy and performed five treatments of the vagina using carbon dioxide laser therapy. Patients were evaluated for improvement in symptoms and signs of atrophy. <br /><br />Of the 34 women enrolled, 28 completed all five laser sessions. At the 6-month follow-up, significant improvements were reported in vaginal dryness (84.6% improvement), dyspareunia (92.8% improvement), urinary frequency (60% improvement), and urinary urgency and urge incontinence (61.1% improvement). Patient-reported improvements increased with successive laser sessions. <br /><br />The study also found that 75% of patients were satisfied with the outcome of the laser therapy, and 71.4% showed improvement in the Gloria Bachmann vaginal health index. No side effects or complications were reported. <br /><br />The findings suggest that vulvo-vaginal laser therapy could be an effective alternative for managing postmenopausal vaginal atrophy, especially for women who cannot or do not want to use estrogen therapy. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and assess the long-term effects of the laser procedure on vaginal tissues. <br /><br />In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential benefits of vulvo-vaginal laser therapy in improving symptoms and signs of postmenopausal vaginal atrophy.
