Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the immediate and long-term effects of comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation (CPFR) on symptom improvement and quality of life (QOL) in women with symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). The study analyzed data from women who underwent CPFR treatment between February 2013 and February 2016. Treatment included various interventions such as pelvic muscle biofeedback, vaginal electrogalvanic stimulation (EGS), behavior modification, and sometimes pessary fitting or pharmacologic intervention. Validated QOL instruments and visual analog scale (VAS) were used to measure symptom improvement before treatment initiation, as well as 6 and 12 months after treatment completion.

Out of 428 enrolled subjects, data from 406 subjects were available for analysis. The demographic data showed that 50% of the subjects were menopausal, and 50% had significant obstetrical injury. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in QOL, which persisted even after one year. The VAS results indicated that 80% of the subjects perceived symptom improvement in urinary, defecatory, and pain symptoms six and twelve months after treatment.

Overall, this prospective analysis suggests that CPFR by an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is effective in improving QOL in women with PFD symptoms, and this improvement can last up to one year. However, the study has some limitations, including the lack of a comparator group and a less-than-ideal response rate at one year. Despite these limitations, the study sheds light on the efficacy of comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation as a treatment option for women with PFD symptoms.
