The study examined the effect of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) on genital body image among women with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). PTNS is an FDA-approved treatment for overactive bladder, but its effect on genital body image has not been studied before.<br /><br />The study included 23 women undergoing PTNS treatment for LUTS between July 2015 and March 2017. Four validated questionnaires were administered at each PTNS treatment session to assess genital body image, pelvic floor bother, and urinary symptoms.<br /><br />The results showed a trend towards improved genital body image and decreased pelvic floor bother among women undergoing PTNS treatments, independent of improvement in urinary symptoms. However, further studies are needed to determine if this change is statistically significant compared to a control group.<br /><br />The mean age of the respondents was 61 years old. The baseline scores for pelvic floor bother and genital self-image were similar to those of patients with pelvic organ prolapse. From the early to late PTNS sessions, there was a decrease in pelvic floor bother and an increase in genital self-image. There was also improvement in urinary symptoms as measured by the American Urological Association Symptom Index and the Michigan Incontinence Symptom Index.<br /><br />There was no significant correlation between the improvements in pelvic floor bother and genital self-image scores and changes in urinary symptoms.<br /><br />In conclusion, this study suggests that PTNS may have a positive effect on genital body image among women with LUTS. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings and to explore the potential benefits of PTNS in treating other pelvic floor disorders.
