Pdf Summary
This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine if immediate pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) improves post-operative quality of life (QOL) following vaginal reconstructive surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). A total of 46 women were enrolled, with 34 completing the study. The study compared standard post-operative care to immediate PFPT. The results showed no significant difference in quality of life questionnaire scores or POP-Q points between the two groups. Therefore, immediate PFPT does not appear to improve QOL or affect POP-Q staging in the 12 weeks after surgery. However, immediate PFPT may be safe for sub-populations of patients with pelvic floor disorders who may need to begin or resume therapy. Further prospective studies are needed to understand the long-term benefits of PFPT after vaginal reconstructive surgery.
