Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to assess the patient experience with an Enhanced Recovery Program (ERP) after urogynecologic surgery. The aim was to identify the aspects of the ERP that patients found most beneficial to their recovery. A total of 198 patients who underwent pelvic reconstructive surgery were surveyed, and the results showed that over 90% of patients positively perceived their surgical experience within the ERP.

The study found that pre-operative patient education was strongly correlated with a positive perception of the perioperative experience. Patients who received education about their surgery and were provided with educational materials in an ERP binder found it very helpful. The compliance rate with carbohydrate loading was high (94%), and patients appreciated being able to drink two hours before surgery (78%).

During the hospital stay, patients reported that their pain was well controlled (95%) and that they experienced minimal nausea (less than 15%) and emesis (12%). Early feeding and ambulation were also reported as helpful for recovery (82% and 91% respectively). After discharge, patients reported adequate pain control (85%) and a low incidence of constipation (less than 40%). However, 22% of patients went home with an indwelling catheter after failing an active voiding trial on the first post-operative day, which correlated with a lower satisfaction rating.

The study also found that patients who reported a poor perception of their overall mental health and those who left the hospital with a Foley catheter were more likely to rate their surgical experience less favorably.

Overall, the study showed that patients valued pre-operative education, pain control, early ambulation, and a smooth recovery without complications. Understanding what patients value in an ERP can help healthcare providers deliver standardized, patient-centered care that increases overall patient satisfaction.
