Pdf Summary
A study compared patient counseling using traditional diagrams (TD) versus an interactive computer program (CAI) for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). More patients expressed satisfaction with counseling using CAI compared to TD for their condition-specific diagnosis and management options. Additionally, more patients expressed a preference for CAI when asked about the counseling modality that helped them make decisions about their care. The study suggests that using CAI may increase patient comprehension of their condition and facilitate their participation in the decision-making process for management. Replacing traditional paper diagrams with CAI for in-office counseling may improve the informed consent process for patients with SUI and POP.

The study included 56 patients with a mean age of 57.9 years. When comparing patient satisfaction with comprehension of their diagnosis/condition, significantly more patients were satisfied with CAI compared to TD. The same was observed regarding patient comprehension of treatment options.

SUI and POP affect a significant number of American women, and a substantial proportion of symptomatic women seek medical care or undergo surgery. CAI, which combines auditory, visual, and interactive methods, has been found to increase patient knowledge and satisfaction during the informed consent process for surgery.

In conclusion, using CAI for patient counseling on SUI and POP may lead to higher patient satisfaction and comprehension compared to traditional diagrams. This method could also improve the informed consent process for these conditions. Further research and implementation of CAI in patient counseling may be beneficial.
