Pdf Summary
This document describes a randomized controlled trial that aimed to assess the impact of intraurethral lidocaine on urodynamic voiding parameters in women. Lower urinary tract symptoms, such as incomplete bladder emptying, can have negative effects on quality of life. Current treatment options are often ineffective, leading to complications such as urinary incontinence and renal problems. The study compared urodynamic parameters in healthy women who received either intraurethral lidocaine or a placebo. The participants underwent several urodynamic studies, including uroflowmetry, cystometry, and pressure-flow studies. EMG activity was also measured to assess pelvic floor muscle recruitment during voiding. The results showed that subjects who received intraurethral lidocaine demonstrated increased EMG activity during urination and had more intermittent urine flow patterns. However, the lidocaine did not alter voiding efficiency. Overall, the study provides insights into the role of urethral sensory feedback in bladder emptying and suggests that intraurethral lidocaine may have potential benefits in managing lower urinary tract symptoms.
