This study aimed to analyze the sentiment expressed on various websites related to the use of vaginal mesh in pelvic reconstructive surgery. The researchers collected Google search data in March 2017 and categorized the websites into five groups: legal, news, medical, reference, and patient-generated. Sentiment scores, ranging from -1 to +1, were assigned to each website. <br /><br />The results showed that the legal and news categories had an overall negative sentiment, while the medical, reference, and patient-generated categories had an overall positive sentiment. Further analysis using Tukey's test revealed that there was a significant difference in sentiment between all pairs except for the medical and reference categories. <br /><br />The researchers concluded that online content does influence public sentiment, and it is important for women and their physicians to be aware of the opinions expressed on websites regarding vaginal mesh. They emphasized that patients need to consider potential sources of bias when evaluating online information. <br /><br />Overall, this study highlights the complex and varied opinions surrounding vaginal mesh, with legal and news websites showing a predominantly negative sentiment, while medical, reference, and patient-generated websites tending to be more positive.
