A study was conducted to explore the role of peer support for women undergoing surgical treatment for pelvic floor disorders (PFDs). Women with PFDs often struggle to understand their condition and treatment options and may seek additional support outside of the healthcare system. This study aimed to identify the perioperative information needs of these women and the critical content areas that could be addressed through peer support.<br /><br />The study included three focus groups consisting of adult, English-speaking women with PFDs who had undergone or were considering surgery. The focus groups were conducted by study investigators and the sessions were summarized and analyzed for themes. The findings suggested that women considering PFD surgery have emotional and information needs including reassurance, information about treatment options, and setting expectations for surgery.<br /><br />Some of the critical content areas that could be addressed through peer support included coping with a catheter, returning to daily activities, and sexual function after surgery. The study also highlighted the importance of patient-centered care and improving decision-making outcomes. Participants expressed the need for more information about surgery and its potential impact on their daily lives.<br /><br />The role of peer support was seen as valuable in providing emotional support, sharing personal experiences, and offering reassurance to women undergoing PFD surgery. Peer support was viewed as a complementary approach to healthcare provider involvement, with peer mentors filling the gaps in knowledge and offering practical advice and support. The study concluded that incorporating peer support into the care of women with PFDs could help to meet their perioperative information needs and improve their surgical experience.<br /><br />Overall, this study highlights the importance of peer support for women undergoing surgery for pelvic floor disorders. It identifies key areas where peer support can offer valuable insights and information, addressing the emotional and informational needs of these women throughout the perioperative period. By incorporating peer support into the care plan, healthcare providers can enhance patient-centered care and improve decision-making outcomes.
