This study is an interim analysis of a prospective non-comparative study assessing the effectiveness of a pixel CO2 laser system in the treatment of vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) or genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). VVA/GSM is a condition that involves changes in the vulvovaginal region that can lead to genito-urinary symptoms and impact a woman's quality of life. While local estrogen is the primary treatment, other non-hormonal therapies have been used, including fractional CO2 laser therapy.<br /><br />The study recruited 15 subjects with an average age of 58.3 years. The subjects received three treatment sessions one month apart with the pixelated CO2 laser. The treatments were standardized with two sets of two to three 360-degree passes. Pre and post-treatment evaluations were conducted, including pelvic exams, vaginal pH assessments, and questionnaires.<br /><br />The results showed significant improvement in vulvovaginal atrophy and associated symptoms in the subjects who received pixelated CO2 laser therapy. There was significant improvement on subjective assessments of GSM, as well as objective indices. However, the subjects did not show improvement in urinary symptoms.<br /><br />The study concluded that pixel CO2 laser therapy is effective in treating vulvovaginal atrophy and associated symptoms. It suggests that this therapy can be a non-hormonal option for women experiencing these symptoms. Further follow-up is planned after one year to assess the long-term effects of the treatment.<br /><br />It is important to note that the CO2 laser and funding for the study were provided by Alma Lasers, but they did not have any input on data collection, analysis of statistics, or the publication of the study.
