Pdf Summary
The objective of this study was to determine the risk of developing a subsequent urinary tract infection (UTI) after receiving onabotulinum toxin A (BTX) injections in women who had a recent UTI. The study included 166 women who underwent their first BTX injection, with 141 having no recent UTI and 25 having a recent UTI. The results showed that 30% of the women experienced a post-injection UTI.

Baseline characteristics such as age, BMI, race, history of recurrent UTI, diabetes, pre-procedural antibiotics, and urinary retention were compared between the two groups. The analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in age, BMI, race, or diabetes between the two groups. However, a higher percentage of women with a recent UTI had a history of recurrent UTI and received pre-procedural antibiotics.

The primary outcome of the study was the subsequent UTI within 90 days after BTX injection. The analysis showed that women with a recent UTI were more likely to develop a subsequent UTI compared to those without a recent UTI. However, when adjusting for potential confounders such as age, history of recurrent UTI, history of diabetes, pre-procedural antibiotics, and urinary retention, the association between a recent UTI and subsequent UTI was no longer significant.

Further analysis revealed that age, history of recurrent UTI, diabetes, and urinary retention were significantly associated with subsequent UTI in the same model.

In conclusion, this study found that having a recent UTI does not significantly increase the risk of developing a subsequent UTI after BTX injection when controlling for other factors. It suggests that it is reasonable to offer BTX injections after a recent UTI. However, other factors such as age, history of recurrent UTI, diabetes, and urinary retention should be considered in assessing the risk of subsequent UTI after BTX injection.
