Pdf Summary
This study examines the characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing mesh removal surgery for the treatment of mesh-related complications. The researchers aim to identify factors that may predispose patients to these complications and assess patient-reported outcomes.

The study analyzed data from 156 patients who underwent removal of pelvic floor mesh implants between 2011 and 2016. The average age of the patients was 57 years, and the average BMI was 29.3 kg/m2. The majority of patients (68%) reported experiencing pain, while other common symptoms included obstructive voiding (34%) and urinary infections (28%).

The results showed that removal of symptomatic pelvic floor mesh implants can effectively improve presenting symptoms and overall patient satisfaction. The majority of patients (68%) reported improvement based on the Patient Global Impression of Improvement scale. The mean satisfaction score on the Likert satisfaction scale was 7.4 out of 10.

The study also highlighted certain risk factors that were prevalent among the patient cohort. The data revealed a high prevalence of tobacco use (current and prior), coexisting psychiatric conditions, immunosuppressive conditions, and chronic pain conditions. These factors should be further investigated as potential risk factors for the development of mesh complications.

In conclusion, surgical removal of symptomatic pelvic floor mesh implants can successfully alleviate symptoms and improve patient satisfaction. Patients who develop mesh complications should be counseled on the option of surgical removal. The study emphasized the importance of further investigating factors such as tobacco use, psychiatric conditions, and chronic pain conditions in relation to mesh complications.
