Pdf Summary
This study examined the safety of performing concomitant sacral neuromodulation (SNM) and gynecologic surgery. SNM is a minimally invasive treatment for urinary and fecal pelvic floor disorders. However, there is limited data on the safety of performing gynecologic procedures with SNM. The objective of this study was to identify the rate of adverse events (AEs) among cases of concomitant SNM and gynecologic surgery.

A retrospective case series was conducted on women undergoing SNM and gynecologic surgery at a single university hospital from 2012-2018. Cases were identified using procedural codes and electronic medical records were reviewed to collect demographic data, AEs, type of anesthesia, and overnight hospital stay.

Among the 200 cases of SNM, 15 concomitant surgeries were identified in 13 patients. The most common concomitant surgery was cystoscopy. Three minor AEs occurred, including two urinary tract infections and one case of urinary retention. All six patients with SNM-related AEs subsequently had their SNM removed. Eight cases were performed under general anesthesia, while seven received monitored sedation.

Overall, no serious AEs were noted in this series of concomitant gynecologic surgery at the time of SNM. The results support the safety of performing gynecologic and SNM surgery together. The study highlights the need for further research in this area to optimize patient care and outcomes.
