Pdf Summary
The study presents a simplified and low-cost beef tongue model for fourth-degree laceration repair simulation. The model utilized one portion of beef tongue and one piece of chicken breast, along with simple suture materials. The beef tongue was bi-valved to create the laceration plane, and small tunnels were made on each side. Beef strips were sutured to create the appearance of the external anal sphincter, and the chicken breast was sutured to represent the rectal mucosa. The model was used in conjunction with a lecture on pelvic anatomy, obstetric lacerations, and episiotomy. The study found that a single beef tongue could yield 4-8 models, with an average cost per model of less than $5. The simplified model enabled the creation of 14 models in approximately two hours, allowing residents to practice on freshly prepared models. A survey of eleven residents who participated in the workshop showed positive responses and improved understanding of pelvic anatomy and laceration repair techniques. The study concludes that the simplified beef tongue model is an effective and affordable tool for resident education, with reduced preparation time and increased flexibility. This model can be used for the prevention and management of obstetric lacerations during vaginal delivery.
