Pdf Summary
This study examined the association between forceps delivery and levator avulsion, a form of pelvic floor injury. The researchers analyzed data from 497 women who had undergone clinical examination, interviews, and 4D translabial ultrasound between 2014 and 2018. They found that older age at first delivery and increasing birth weight were associated with levator avulsion, while the time since forceps delivery was not a significant predictor. This suggests that changes in skill levels with forceps over the last 40 years have not affected the risk of trauma associated with forceps delivery.

The study also found that forceps delivery is a strong risk factor for levator avulsion compared to normal vaginal delivery. The prevalence of levator avulsion was also higher in women who delivered more recently. However, the time since forceps delivery was not found to be a significant factor in the development of levator avulsion. Only age at first delivery and birth weight remained significant predictors.

Overall, this study suggests that age at first delivery and birth weight are important factors to consider when assessing the risk of levator avulsion. It also suggests that changes in skill levels with forceps delivery over time do not seem to have an impact on the risk of trauma associated with this delivery method. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between forceps delivery and levator avulsion.

(Author: J Caudwell-Hall, S Arcanjo Lino, M Gillor, and HP Dietz; Contact: drjessicacaudwellhall@gmail.com)
