Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the complications and re-operations after Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT) operations in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Data from 446 women who underwent TVT operation at a tertiary referral center were collected during a 5-year period. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were evaluated short-term after 3 months, while re-operations were evaluated up to 6 years after the TVT operation. The study found that the TVT operation had a high safety and efficacy, with only minor complications and few re-operations. Intraoperative complications included bladder perforation (2.2%), while postoperative complications included infection (0.7%), hematoma (0.9%), bleeding (0.2%), pain (0.7%), erosion of the vaginal mucosa (1.1%), persistent SUI (0.7%), and voiding dysfunction > 24 hours (10.3%). No major complications occurred. Re-operations for complications included operation for infection (0.4%), incontinence surgery for persistent SUI (0.4%), revision for tape erosion (1.1%), tape mobilization (3.6%), and revision of the tape (0.2%). There was a significant reduction in urinary symptoms after the TVT operation, and this improvement was not affected by the occurrence of complications. The study found no association between baseline characteristics and complications. Overall, the study showed that TVT operation is a safe and effective surgical treatment for SUI, with minimal complications and re-operations.
