Pdf Summary
The study analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Sample Cohort DB to assess the current status of pelvic organ prolapse surgery among Korean women. From 2002 to 2013, a total of 3,678 cases of pelvic organ prolapse surgery were performed, with 11.2% of these cases being repeated surgeries. Out of the repeated surgeries, 9.0% were performed due to re-operative failure.

The number of prolapse surgeries increased over the years, but this trend was mainly seen in the re-operative cases. The age distribution of the subjects undergoing surgery showed that the age group of 40 years had the highest percentage (29.7%), followed by the age groups of 60 years (23.2%) and 50 years (20.8%).

The most common type of surgery for prolapse was anterior colporrhaphy (27.6%), followed by vaginal hysterectomy (26.8%). Vault suspension was performed in 76.3% of cases, with 2.8% of prolapse surgeries using implantable mesh since 2005.

This study provides preliminary data on the current status of pelvic organ prolapse surgery in Korean women. It highlights the different features compared to Western data, particularly in terms of mesh use. The authors suggest that it is urgent to establish comprehensive statistics on pelvic organ prolapse surgery among Korean women by analyzing the entire dataset of the National Health Insurance Service.
