This study sought to evaluate the quality of outcomes and methodology in trials on synthetic mesh interventions for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The researchers conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and assessed the methodological quality using the modified Jadad criteria and the outcome reporting quality using the MOMENT criteria. A total of 69 studies published between 2000 and 2017 were included in the analysis.<br /><br />The results showed that the mean Jadad score, which assesses methodological quality, was 3.6 out of 5. The mean MOMENT score, which assesses outcome reporting quality, was 4.59 out of 6. There was a correlation between outcome quality and methodological quality, as well as between outcome quality and the year of publication, but no association with the journal’s impact factor.<br /><br />The researchers concluded that although methodological quality and outcome reporting quality were correlated, the year of publication and journal impact factor did not strongly influence the studies’ methodological quality. Therefore, they emphasized the need to evaluate the quality of outcomes, publication characteristics, and methodological parameters as part of a process to develop Core Outcome Sets for POP trials.<br /><br />This study highlights the variation in outcome reporting and outcome measures in trials on synthetic mesh interventions for POP. It also emphasizes the importance of standardizing outcome reporting and improving methodological quality in these trials. By developing Core Outcome Sets, researchers can establish a common framework for reporting outcomes, leading to better comparability and synthesis of evidence in this field.
