Do Surgical Experience and Specialty Training Impact Perioperative Surgical Outcomes for Vaginal Hysterectomies? - Pedro M Alvarez, MD
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) training and years of experience on perioperative outcomes in vaginal hysterectomy (VH) for benign indications. The researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study of VH surgeries performed between 2015 and 2017, excluding cases involving cancer or pelvic organ prolapse (POP). They compared surgical outcomes between FPMRS trained and non-FPMRS surgeon groups, with the primary outcome being estimated blood loss (EBL).

The results showed that the FPMRS group had a lower average EBL with a narrower standard deviation compared to the non-FPMRS group. When analyzing by years of experience, surgical outcomes did not differ in the FPMRS group. However, in the non-FPMRS group, those with less than 10 years of experience had a trend for higher EBL compared to those with more than 10 years of experience.

In conclusion, the study found that vaginal hysterectomies performed for benign indications had lower EBL when performed by a FPMRS surgeon compared to a non-FPMRS surgeon. Additionally, years of experience had a significant impact on EBL for non-FPMRS surgeons, with a higher average EBL observed in those with less than 10 years of experience.
