Does Initial Postoperative Voided Volume Predict Time to Normal Voiding Following Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery? - Lauren E Stewart, MD
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The study aimed to investigate the impact of the initial postoperative voided volume on the duration of urinary retention following pelvic reconstructive surgery. The researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study on women who underwent the surgery and had an unsuccessful initial voided volume. They collected postoperative voided volumes and categorized patients into two groups: those who were unable to void (0mL) and those who voided any amount (>0mL). The researchers analyzed the effect of various patient and clinical factors on the duration of urinary retention.

The study found no significant difference in the duration of urinary retention between patients who voided 0mL and those who voided >0mL. However, the duration of urinary retention was correlated with the length of the procedure and the preoperative post-void residual. Patients who developed a urinary tract infection had a longer duration of urinary retention.

The findings of this study suggest that the majority of urinary retention resolves spontaneously in the days following pelvic reconstructive surgery and that inability to void is not associated with a longer duration of urinary retention compared to the ability to void. The study also highlights the importance of considering procedural factors, such as procedure length, and preoperative factors, such as post-void residual, in predicting the duration of urinary retention. Additionally, the study suggests that urinary tract infection may prolong the duration of urinary retention.

In conclusion, this study emphasizes the need for further research to better understand the factors influencing the duration of urinary retention following pelvic reconstructive surgery. These findings can potentially aid in optimizing postoperative management strategies and improving patient outcomes.
