Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate whether there are changes in urinary cytokine signalling with age in women with refractory detrusor overactivity (DO). The researchers collected midstream urine samples from postmenopausal women with refractory DO and controls. The samples were analyzed for 27 cytokines and compared between the clinical groups. The results showed that in women with refractory DO, there were several cytokines that positively correlated with increasing age, indicating increased cytokine signalling. This correlation was observed even in women without a history of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI). In the control group, four cytokines were found to increase with age. The researchers concluded that increased cytokine signalling associated with aging may enhance the sensitivity of afferent nerves and promote distressing urgency symptoms in women with refractory DO. The study suggests that both aging and infection may play separate roles in the pathophysiology of refractory DO.
