Pdf Summary
This study aimed to describe the dysfunction, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and contextual factors in South African women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The sample consisted of 100 Asian, Caucasian, and Colored women scheduled for pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. The average age of the participants was 59 years. The most common symptoms experienced by the participants included a stage III POP, with 86% of participants having this stage. The quality of life of the women was mainly affected in the social, emotional, and sleep/energy domains, which differed from studies in other populations where physical and role limitations were more affected. Some contextual factors that were identified as population-specific may interact with the domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), leading to differences in these domains when comparing different populations with POP.

The study suggests that future research should focus on the effect of lifestyle interventions and interactions between contextual factors and the impairment domains of the ICF in women with POP in order to determine the best management strategies. The study was conducted by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of the Free State. This research adds to the understanding of how POP affects the lives of South African women and highlights the need for population-specific studies to provide accurate and relevant information on activity limitations and participation restrictions in different populations.
