Effectiveness of an Educational Video on Stress Urinary Incontinence to Counsel Patients: A Pilot Study - Woojin Chong, MD
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This pilot study aimed to determine whether watching an educational video on stress urinary incontinence (SUI), specifically treatment options including TVT (tension-free vaginal tape), would be effective in helping patients understand management options. The study included 18 adult females aged 40-60 years. A 4 minute and 46-second educational video and questionnaires were internally validated by 5 urogynecologists.

The results showed that watching the educational video did not significantly enhance patients' knowledge on SUI, although the sample size was small. Subjects without SUI improved their post-video scores more than those with SUI. However, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed no significant statistical difference between pre- and post-video scores.

Demographic data showed that subjects with SUI had higher parity, fewer C-sections, and lower body mass index compared to those without SUI.

The most common surgical treatment for SUI is mid-urethral sling placement. Traditionally, the health care provider verbally explains the benefits and risks of the procedure during the preoperative visit, but nowadays many patients rely on the internet for quick access to health information. However, literature on the quality and usefulness of urogynecological content on social media sites is still limited.

In conclusion, this pilot study suggests that watching an educational video on SUI may not effectively enhance patients' knowledge on the topic. Future studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to further investigate the effectiveness of educational videos in counseling patients on SUI treatment options.
