Effects of an Education Program with Vaginal Palpation in Pelvic Floor Muscle Motor Learning and Pelvic Alignment - Prospective Clinical Trial - Maria Bortolini
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the effects of an educational program with vaginal palpation on pelvic floor muscle (PFM) motor learning and pelvic alignment in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Forty-one women with SUI were included in the study. They underwent evaluations of PFM function, pelvic alignment, and self-perception of the effectiveness of PFM exercises. The intervention program consisted of demonstrations and discussions about PFM anatomy, function, and dysfunction, emphasizing correct PFM contractions through vaginal palpation, and promoting body and PFM awareness. The participants attended four 60-minute sessions over the course of a month.

The results showed a significant increase in the strength of the PFM, the number of fast-twitch contractions, and self-perception of the educational program's effects on body perception and health benefits. However, there were no significant changes in pelvic alignment after the intervention.

The study found a prevalence of posterior tilt in the pelvic alignment of the participants. The educational program did not alter the alignment, but it did improve PFM function. Further research is needed to explore the correlation between posterior pelvic tilt and SUI.

In conclusion, the educational program with vaginal palpation improved PFM strength and function in women with SUI, but it did not affect pelvic alignment. This information may be valuable in guiding future interventions and treatment approaches for women with SUI.
