Pdf Summary
This research study aimed to determine the rate and risk factors for post-operative acute urinary retention (AUR) in patients who underwent pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery. The study also aimed to validate the Meekins et al. (2017) algorithm for diagnosing AUR by comparing it to the current diagnostic standards used at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC).

The researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of POP procedures performed at KHSC between May 2011 and June 2017. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors for AUR, and the Meekins et al. algorithm was applied to determine its validity as a diagnostic test for AUR.

The study found that the overall post-operative AUR rate at KHSC was 28.1%. Advanced prolapse staging (Stage > 3) was the only significant risk factor for AUR identified. However, the Meekins et al. algorithm did not perform as well in the study population and was not consistent with previously reported values.

The researchers acknowledged some limitations of the study, including missing or incomplete patient data and the lack of a current gold standard for diagnosing AUR. They also noted that the backfill-assisted protocol used in the Meekins et al. study differed from KHSC's spontaneous bladder filling protocol.

In conclusion, this study provides important insights into the rate and risk factors for post-operative AUR in patients undergoing POP surgery. However, further research is needed to refine the diagnosis and management of AUR in this patient population. Funding for the study was provided by the Thomas M. and Louise A. Brown Research Studentship, and the authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose.

(Source: "Incidence of Acute Urinary Retention Following Procedures Correcting Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Validation of a Screening Protocol", Azraa Janmohamed, Jessica Pudwell, Marie-Andrée Harvey, PosterPresentations.com, 2015)
