Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in middle-aged and older women in Beijing communities, as well as the related factors contributing to these conditions. A total of 2,791 eligible questionnaires were collected from women aged 35 to 65 years, and various symptoms of PFD were assessed using the PFDI-20 questionnaire. The study found that the prevalence rates of vulvovaginal atrophy, vaginal pain, dyspareunia, vaginal pruritus, and vaginal local burning sensation were relatively high in these women. The total incidence rate of PFD symptoms was 64.3%, with urinary distress being the most common symptom. Factors such as perimenopause, physical disease, menopause drug use, and vulvovaginal atrophy were found to be negatively associated with PFD, while high school and secondary school education had a positive association. Regarding POP, the prevalence rates of uterine prolapse, anterior vaginal wall prolapse, and posterior vaginal wall prolapse were reported. Factors such as overweight and obesity, vaginal delivery, gynecological surgery, gynecological diseases, and educational background were found to be negatively associated with POP. The study concluded that the prevalence of vulvovaginal atrophy was high in middle-aged and older women in Beijing communities. The factors contributing to PFD and POP were not only related to menopause symptoms but also to educational background, physical disease, and VVA symptoms. Age, BMI, delivery mode, gynecological surgery, gynecological diseases, and educational background were identified as related factors for POP.
