Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to evaluate the need for routine preoperative urodynamic assessment in women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) who do not have lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The study included 37 out of 102 women with POP who agreed to undergo surgical correction. The mean age of the participants was 58.8, with a median parity of 2 and a mean BMI of 28.8.

Clinical findings showed that the majority of women had stage II or III cystocele and rectocele, with a smaller percentage having stage IV prolapse. Urodynamic diagnoses revealed that 24.3% had idiopathic detrusor overactivity, 13.5% had bladder outflow obstruction, 16.2% had a combination of both, and 29.7% had urodynamic stress urinary incontinence. Only 13.5% had normal urodynamic results.

Based on these findings, the study concluded that routine preoperative urodynamic assessments are necessary for women with POP, regardless of the presence of LUTS. The researchers believe that urodynamic studies provide valuable information for women undergoing pelvic organ prolapse surgery and can help in counseling these patients.

The study references previous research that supports the role of urodynamics in prolapse surgery and highlights the importance of complete management of POP, even in asymptomatic individuals. By providing more insight into the condition, urodynamic assessments can aid in determining the most appropriate surgical plan and improve patient outcomes.
