Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for internal anal sphincter (IAS) injuries in women with obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS). The researchers conducted a prospective study, examining 213 women with OASIS within three months of delivery. They collected data on the patients' history, performed examinations, and used 3D endoanal ultrasound scans. The results showed that out of the 213 women, 35 (16%) had IAS injuries. Anal incontinence and fecal urgency were significantly more common in women with IAS injuries. The study found that the use of Syntocinon, a medication used to induce or speed up labor, was the only independent risk factor for IAS disruption with an odds ratio of 22.7.

The study's conclusions highlight the increased risk of anal incontinence and fecal urgency when the IAS is involved in OASIS. The use of Syntocinon was identified as a significant independent risk factor for IAS injury. Syntocinon is commonly used to reduce labor duration, but caution should be exercised when using it due to the increased risk of IAS injury found in this study. The researchers suggest that healthcare providers should consider this risk when deciding whether or not to use Syntocinon.

Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the risk factors for IAS injuries in women with OASIS. It emphasizes the importance of considering the potential consequences of using Syntocinon in labor induction or augmentation. Further research and awareness are needed to effectively manage and reduce the risk of these injuries in women during childbirth.
