Patient Experience with Enhanced Recovery and Early Discharge for Minimally Invasive Sacrocolpopexy: A Qualitative Study - Sarah L. Evans, MD
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study aimed to explore the patient experiences with same-day and next-day discharge after minimally invasive sacrocolpopexy (SCP) within an enhanced recovery protocol. The study included fourteen women, with seven in each discharge group. The results showed that patients discharged the same day spent more time in the post-anesthesia care unit and were more likely to be discharged with a catheter.

Overall, all women reported benefit from the enhanced recovery after minimally invasive SCP and felt prepared for surgery and at-home recovery. The presence of a caregiver at home was identified as an important factor that should be assessed preoperatively. Patients also expressed the need for targeted information regarding postoperative catheter management and coping.

The study utilized a qualitative research design, with telephone interviews conducted 2-6 weeks after surgery. Thematic saturation was achieved, and the transcripts were analyzed using the constant comparative method.

The interviews explored various aspects of the patient experience, including patient education and preparedness, physical recovery, emotional recovery, overall perception and willingness to recommend, trust in care and decision-making, importance of social support, and sense of physical well-being.

Most women felt well-informed about their procedures and prepared for what to expect perioperatively. Both discharge groups reported positive experiences with physical and emotional at-home recovery. Same-day discharge patients coped well with early discharge and found comfort in being at home. Support at home from friends and family was identified as crucial during recovery.

Returning home with a catheter was a challenge for same-day discharge patients. However, overall, both discharge groups expressed willingness to participate in an enhanced recovery program again and would recommend it to others.

The study suggests the need for future research to translate patient insights into objective outcomes that can be studied through quantitative study designs. Overall, the findings highlight the benefits of enhanced recovery protocols for minimally invasive SCP and emphasize the importance of patient education, social support, and preoperative assessment of caregiver availability.
