Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to determine if certain styles of pessaries are more prone to erosion rates. The study included 279 patients who had been wearing pessaries for a median of 5.5 years. The patients were divided into three groups: Erosion Group (n=126), Control Group with no erosions (n=124), and Change Group who developed erosions over the course of the year (n=29). The study collected data on demographics, lifestyle factors, physical factors, medications, comorbidities, information about erosions, and pessary types.

The erosions were assessed based on a classification system and measured in millimeters. The pessaries were separated into five main styles: Ring, Cube, Gellhorn, Shaatz, and Dish. The study found that the proportion of patients wearing gellhorn pessaries who had erosions was higher than other styles, but it was not statistically significant. There were no significant associations between pessary style and the development of erosions in the Change Group. In the Control Group, only 18% had prior erosions, compared to 81% and 72% in the Erosion and Change Groups, respectively.

The study has some limitations, including not representing all women seen in the clinic and potentially not being representative of general pessary wearers. The study was funded by the Urology Nurses of Canada, and the nursing staff at the Pelvic Floor Clinic were involved in recruiting participants.

Overall, this study suggests that there may not be a significant association between pessary styles and erosion rates. However, further research is needed to better understand the factors that contribute to erosions in pessary wearers.
