The study aimed to determine the accuracy of portable bladder ultrasound in assessing postvoid residual (PVR) in obese women compared to non-obese women. A total of 133 women participated in the study, with 57 classified as obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) and 76 as non-obese (BMI <30 kg/m2). The primary outcome was the difference between ultrasound measurements and catheterized measurements of PVR.<br /><br />The key findings of the study were as follows:<br /><br />- Portable bladder ultrasound was found to be accurate within 50 mL in assessing PVR in the outpatient setting.<br />- The accuracy of bladder ultrasound in PVR assessment was not affected by factors such as age, stage of pelvic organ prolapse according to the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system, or location of pelvic organ prolapse.<br />- Bladder ultrasound was found to be accurate in women with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 or higher.<br />- However, PVR volumes exceeding 200 mL, regardless of BMI, may be more accurately assessed using urethral catheterization.<br /><br />These findings suggest that portable bladder ultrasound can be a reliable method for assessing PVR in obese women, particularly in the outpatient setting. It is especially accurate for those with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 or higher. However, for larger PVR volumes, the gold standard method of urethral catheterization may be more accurate.<br /><br />In summary, the study concludes that portable bladder ultrasound is a valid and accurate method for assessing PVR in obese women, except for higher PVR volumes which may require alternative methods such as urethral catheterization.
