Pdf Summary
This study examines the predictors for Pelvic Floor Health Literacy (PFHL) in a culturally diverse, urogynecology patient population. The overall PFHL rate was found to be 12%. PFHL is defined as correctly knowing the presence of three openings in the female pelvis and identifying the bladder, rectum, vagina, and uterus on a sagittal pelvis diagram.

The study population consisted of patients with a large Asian (22%) and Spanish (26%) speaking community, making it unique compared to most urban populations in the US. Previous studies have suggested that low health literacy in the urogynecology population correlates with less education, Hispanic origin, older populations, and cognitive impairment. However, age, dementia, and language were not predictive factors in this population.

Based on the findings, the greatest predictor of PFHL was prior health education and knowledge of female anatomy and organ function. Therefore, to improve PFHL, patient pamphlets should focus on female anatomy and organ function.

The study collected data from 84 participants, with a mean age of 63.3 years. 46% of the participants were college educated, and 60% spoke a language other than English and required a translator. The participants spoke 13 different languages.

In conclusion, this study identified education level, partial anatomic knowledge, and prior health education as predictors for PFHL in a culturally diverse, urogynecology patient population. Language, culture, age, dementia, and the ability to navigate the healthcare system were not significant predictors. This information can be used to tailor patient education materials to improve PFHL in this population.
