Prevalence of Lichen Sclerosus in Patients with Autoimmune Connective Tissue Disorders and Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Retrospective Cohort Study - Bethany Kette, BS
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document discusses a retrospective cohort study that aimed to determine the prevalence of lichen sclerosus (LS) in patients with autoimmune connective tissue disorders (AICTDs). The study also compared demographic characteristics between patients with LS and AICTDs and matched controls. LS is a chronic dermatologic condition that affects the vulva and perineum and has been linked to autoimmune diseases.

The study identified 84 patients with AICTDs and matched controls. The AICTDs included rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other connective tissue disorders. The researchers found that more patients with AICTDs were diagnosed with LS compared to those without, but this difference was not statistically significant. Adjustments for patients with hysterectomies and menopausal status were also not statistically significant.

The study emphasizes the need for additional research to establish the true prevalence rate of LS in patients with AICTDs. This information would be valuable for guiding screening strategies and providing better counseling, screening, and treatments for patients with AICTDs.

It is theorized that women with connective tissue disorders may have a higher risk of developing pelvic floor disorders, but there is limited published information on this topic. Therefore, understanding the characteristics of patients with AICTDs who present with pelvic floor disorders is important.

Overall, this study suggests that patients with AICTDs and pelvic floor disorders may be more likely to have a concurrent diagnosis of LS compared to matched controls. However, larger studies are needed to confirm these findings and provide more insight into screening and treatment strategies for LS in patients with AICTDs.
