Pdf Summary
A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women attending the Minnesota State Fair using the Epidemiology of Prolapse and Incontinence Questionnaire (EPIQ). The study aimed to assess the association between POP and various demographic factors.

The study included 1,568 female participants with a mean age of 46 years. The overall prevalence of self-reported POP was 5.4%, lower than previous studies. POP was more prevalent in women aged 60 and above compared to all participants (7.0% vs. 5.4%), but this association was not statistically significant. Smoking status was not significantly associated with POP, although a higher percentage of current and past smokers reported POP compared to non-smokers (10.2% vs. 6.9%).

The prevalence of POP was significantly associated with a history of childbirth, particularly vaginal delivery. Women with a history of operative vaginal delivery had the highest prevalence of POP at 14.2%. BMI was also significantly associated with POP, with obese women (BMI ≥ 30) having the highest rate of 8.4%.

The study found that the prevalence of POP in Minnesota women using the EPIQ was lower than previously reported. The rates of surgery for POP were also lower in this cohort. Further studies are needed to understand the reasons behind these findings and to assess the impact of POP on women's health and quality of life.

Overall, this study provides insights into the prevalence and risk factors of POP in Minnesota women, highlighting the importance of childbirth and BMI in its development.
