Pdf Summary
This is a summary of a study comparing the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) after hysterectomy for benign disease vs. gynecologic malignancy. The study was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a tertiary care referral center from 2006 to 2010. The study included women aged 18 and older who had undergone hysterectomy for benign disease or gynecologic malignancy. The prevalence of UI and POP was assessed based on patient report, diagnosis codes, and treatment codes. The study found that UI and POP were more prevalent after hysterectomy for benign disease compared to hysterectomy for malignancy. The study also found that women who underwent hysterectomy for malignant disease were older, obese, and more likely to be Caucasian. The study did not find a difference in the risk of developing UI or POP between the two groups after adjusting for confounders. The study concluded that the differences in the prevalence of UI and POP may reflect differences in the patient populations who undergo these surgeries.
