Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Operative Route of Hysterectomy for Pelvic Organ Prolapse - Kimia Menhaji, MD

Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate whether there are racial disparities in the mode of pelvic floor disorder surgery for hysterectomy. Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) affects a significant percentage of women, and it is a major indication for hysterectomy in postmenopausal women. Minimally invasive procedures have shown benefits over open surgeries in terms of shorter length of stay and less blood loss. However, recent data suggests that minority women are more likely to undergo open procedures, such as hysterectomies, for benign gynecologic conditions and experience more postoperative complications.

The study analyzed data from 8,748 women who had undergone hysterectomies with POP repair. The results showed that Hispanic patients were more likely to undergo open abdominal hysterectomy compared to White patients. However, the odds of open surgery were not significantly different for Black or Asian patients compared to White patients. The study also highlighted the need for further research to investigate the complex mechanisms that contribute to these disparities in surgical route for POP repair.

Overall, the findings suggest that there are racial disparities in the mode of hysterectomy for pelvic organ prolapse. The study emphasizes the importance of addressing these disparities and conducting further research to better understand the underlying factors contributing to these disparities.
