Relationship between Interstitial Cystitis (IC) with or without Cystoscopic Findings and Gastroenterological (GI) Functional and Mucosal Disorders - Ioana Marcu, MD

Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the relationship between interstitial cystitis (IC) with or without cystoscopic findings and upper gastrointestinal (GI) functional and mucosal disorders. The researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of 106 patients with IC who had also undergone outpatient gastroenterology evaluation. Demographic information, medical history, IC history, and GI history were collected and analyzed.

Of the 106 patients diagnosed with clinical IC, 82 had undergone cystoscopy with hydrodistention. The presence of glomerulations on cystoscopy was significantly associated with GI mucosal disease, with an odds ratio of 11.48. However, the lack of glomerulations was not significantly associated with GI functional disease.

These findings suggest that there is a relationship between IC and upper GI mucosal disease. This association adds to previous research that has shown a link between IC and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The results also suggest that there may be different underlying pathological processes for the two subtypes of GI disorders.

More research is needed to explore shared factors that may explain the similarities between IC and upper GI mucosal disease. The study provides valuable insights into the relationship between these conditions but does not disclose any relevant financial relationships for the authors.
