Pdf Summary
This study analyzed data from Hospital Episodes Statistics in the NHS of England between 2006 and 2015 to examine the uptake of robotic gynaecological surgery. The study looked at procedures such as hysterectomy, adnexal surgery, sacrocolpopexy, sacrohysteropexy, and colposuspension. The results showed that there were 3822 robotic gynaecological procedures performed during this time period, with adnexal surgery accounting for 50.16%, hysterectomy for 45.55%, and sacrocolpopexy/sacrohysteropexy for 4.29%. There was no significant difference in outcomes based on trust robotic procedure volumes. However, there was significant geographical variation in the uptake of robotic procedures across England.

The study also provided outcomes for the years 2010-2015. For hysterectomy and adnexal surgery, the median length of stay was 1 day, and the percentage of laparotomies ranged from 0.2% to 1.5%. The 30-day emergency re-admission rate for both procedures ranged from 3.1% to 5.3%. The number of procedures for sacrocolpopexy and sacrohysteropexy was small, with a total of 156 procedures performed during the study period. No procedures for colposuspension were reported.

Overall, the study found that under 4000 gynaecological procedures were performed robotically in England between 2006 and 2015. The available data suggest good clinical outcomes for these procedures, but there is wide geographical variation in the uptake of robotic surgery across the country. This study provides valuable insights into the utilization of robotic technology in gynaecological surgery in the NHS of England.
