The Effect of Anterior and/or Apical Prolapse Repair on the Risk of Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections - Joseph B Pincus, MD
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the effect of anterior and/or apical prolapse repair on the risk of recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI) and the total number of UTIs. The researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study, including female patients who underwent prolapse repair between September 2012 and March 2018. Patients' demographic data, medical history, and UTI status were collected from electronic medical records.

The results showed that out of the 207 patients who had surgery, 6.3% had rUTI before the operation, and 5.8% had rUTI after the surgery. Similarly, 18.4% had at least one UTI before surgery, and 17.9% had at least one UTI after surgery. However, the differences in UTI rates were not statistically significant before and after the operation. The study also found that patient age had a weak but statistically significant association with the overall risk of having at least one UTI.

The researchers compared their findings to previous studies, such as SISTER and TOMUS trials, which showed no increased incidence of rUTI after the placement of a mid-urethral sling. Consistent with those studies, this study suggests that anterior and/or apical prolapse repair does not alter the risk of rUTI or the overall risk of UTI.

In conclusion, this study suggests that anterior and/or apical prolapse repair does not affect the risk of rUTI or the overall risk of UTI. These findings provide valuable information for healthcare professionals and patients considering prolapse repair surgery. However, it is important to note that this was a retrospective study, and further research is needed to validate these results.
