Pdf Summary
Complex urodynamic testing (UDT) is a common procedure in urogynecology that can cause discomfort, embarrassment, and anxiety for patients. This study aimed to determine if applying 2% lidocaine gel externally could reduce patient discomfort during UDT. The study involved 134 female subjects who were randomly assigned to either a water-based lubricant group (Group A) or a 2% lidocaine group (Group B). The primary outcome measured was the change in visual analog pain scale (VAS) scores from baseline to 4-6 hours after UDT. Secondary outcomes included VAS scores at different time points, urodynamic outcomes, and any adverse events.

The results showed that there was no significant difference in the change in VAS scores between the two groups. There were also no significant differences in urodynamic outcomes. Both the water-based lubricant and the lidocaine gel were found to be safe and well-tolerated, with no adverse events reported.

Based on these findings, the authors concluded that for most women, complex UDT is not associated with significant pain or discomfort. Additionally, the use of topically applied 2% lidocaine gel was not superior to water-based lubricants in reducing discomfort during or after UDT. This information can be helpful in counseling women about what to expect during complex UDT.

Overall, this study suggests that externally applied lidocaine gel may not be necessary to minimize patient pain during complex UDT. However, it's important to note that individual patient preferences and experiences may vary, and further research is needed to explore other methods for improving patient comfort during this procedure.
