Urodynamic Testing in Interstitial Cystitis Patients: Do Symptoms and Cystoscopic Findings Relate to Urodynamic Volumes? - Tess Crouss, MD

Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a study conducted by Drexel University on urodynamic testing in female patients with interstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic pelvic pain syndrome. The objective of the study was to assess urodynamic results in IC patients and correlate these results with symptom severity and cystoscopic findings.

The study included a retrospective chart review of IC patients who had undergone cystoscopy with hydrodistension and urodynamic testing. The researchers collected data on symptom severity, pelvic floor muscle exam findings, cystoscopy findings, and urodynamic results. Statistical tests were used to analyze the data and determine correlations.

The results of the study showed that IC patients tended to have lower volumes on most urodynamic parameters. Increased symptom severity, more severe cystoscopic findings, and lower anesthetic bladder capacities were associated with lower urodynamic volumes. Non-anatomic bladder outlet obstruction was found in a higher degree in IC patients.

Overall, the study concluded that urodynamic testing can be a useful adjunct in the evaluation of interstitial cystitis. The findings suggest that urodynamic volumes may be related to symptom severity and cystoscopic findings in IC patients.

In summary, this study conducted by Drexel University found that urodynamic volumes were generally lower in female IC patients. Symptom severity and cystoscopic findings demonstrated negative correlations with most urodynamic volumes. The study suggests that urodynamic testing can provide valuable information in the evaluation of interstitial cystitis.
